We ran a Q&A as part of the 7 day Challenge last week
And amongst a load of great questions we had a few about intrusive thoughts
I suppose it depends what we mean by intrusive on times
But for the sake of this here email lets make it thoughts we just don’t like..
How do we block them/get rid of them
Was the main part of the question
And there are loads of ways that we can feel more comfortable in our thoughts
I’m a big fan of meditation with mental rehearsal for training the subconscious (after all 90% of our thinking is roughly coming from there)
Learning to train our awareness each day with simple practices so we can put it the parts of our mind we like
Making friends and being more inquisitive than destructive in our approach to stuff like that
But maybe one of the greatest things we can do is to not identify with them too much
We all have some pretty weird and messed up thoughts
I made an effort to sit and watch my thoughts all Saturday and it’s crazy what you see
I remember going on a silent retreat and that literally blew my mind how crazy our thoughts can be
But the more we seem to identify with them the harder the dance becomes…
It taught me that ultimately thoughts are just passing by and have no real power until we decide to jump on them and give them a ton of focus and energy
And nothing seems to fuel them more than trying to fight them away
I suppose what I am saying here is one key is to go from absorbed in them to observing them..
And that first step is a skill that can be honed and practiced
